Kovalainen set for return to GP
LAST UPDATE: Thursday, 8 May 2008 - 11:31:36 PM
ISTANBUL: Heiki Kovalainen will be back behind the wheel this weekend for the Turkish Grand Prix after medics passed the Finn fit to drive following his lucky escape in Spain.
The 26-year-old Finn sustained nothing more than mild concussion after he ploughed, nose first, into a tyre barrier at the Circuit de Catalunya, destroying the front of his car.
Kovalainen was immediately knocked unconscious by the force of the impact, sustained by a failure of the left-front wheel rim that led to an immediate deflation of the tyre.
Prior to taking the FIA medical Kovalainen said: “I can’t wait to get back into the car, but the decision is out of my hands. The FIA will make it based on safety grounds.” “I am feeling good. I left Spain on Thursday and went back to Finland, where I spent time working with the team doctor at our facility to ensure I am fit for the race.”
The doctors at the Istanbul Park circuit medical centre were satisfied that Kovalainen was well enough to resume driving duties. “Following a medical examination this morning, Heikki Kovalainen has been cleared to race in the 2008 Turkish Grand Prix,” read an official statement.
