Dr C R Soman passes away

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leading public health expert and a former professor at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, Dr C R Soman passed away on Friday owing to heart ailment at a private hospital here at around 3 pm. He was also the chairman of Health Action by People, an NGO working in the field of public health. He was 72. He was admitted to the hospital on Thursday and was subjected to by-pass surgery. But his condition had been quite unstable.
He acquired degree in medicine from Thiruvananthapuram Medical College in 1962 and completed MD in Biochemistry in 1966. Soon after his academic years, he was appointed as a lecturer at Biochemistry Department in Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. He became the Associate Professor at the Nutrition Department there which was started in 1976. He retired in 1992 and during the span from 1981 to ’92 he served as the professor and head of the department.
Meantime, he got a fellowship from World Health Organization in 1978 and consequently he went to London and did his Post Graduation in Nutrition.
A worker of the Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad, he commenced the Health Action by People in 1993 after his retirement. He has been serving as the Chairman of the organization for 16 years.
An eminent professor and a researcher, Soman has published five research theses. He was also well-known as a quiz master.
Soman was residing at Thayyil House in Prasanth Nagar near Ulloor in Thiruvananthapuram.
His body would be cremated at Santhikavadam in Thaykkad at 12:30 pm.
He is survived by his wife Aliamma and two sons-- Rajeev Soman and Rajesh Soman.
