Ranji Trophy tournament to get underway from today

MUMBAI: Away from the hustle and bustle of the international scene and with the fans'' focus firmly set on the rousing India-Australia ODI battle, the national cricket championship for the Ranji Trophy commences today at seven centres in the Elite Division. Holders Mumbai, who are gunning for their 39th title, take on hosts Punjab in Chandigarh while the other Group A ties would see Tamil Nadu against Railways at Delhi, Hyderabad playing host to Himachal Pradesh and Orissa taking on Gujarat at Ahmedabad.
In Group B, Delhi are up against hosts Baroda, Uttar Pradesh are hosting Karnataka and Bengal are clashing with hosts Maharashtra at Pune which is hosting a Ranji Trophy game after the gap of a couple of seasons. The Plate division featuring 12 teams split into groups A and B is also commencing today.
Plate fixtures: Group A: Vidarbha v Goa, Nagpur; Jharkhand v Tripura, Jamshedpur, Assam V Rajasthan, Guwahati Group B: MP v Haryana, Indore; J and K v Services in J and K; Kerala v Andhra in Kerala. The league phase will end on December 18 and will be followed by the knock-out phase from December 24 with the four quarter finals.
The semi finals and final are scheduled from January 3-6 and 11-15, 2010.
