Private medical college fees: No hope for children of middleclass men
LAST UPDATE: Tuesday, 27 Jun 2017 - 6:41:58 AM

Until now the fees for 20 percentage of the merit seats in private medical colleges had an annual fees of Rs. 25,000, and 30 percentage of the merit seats had an annual fees of Rs. 2.5 lakhs. Now these seats are no more available. The annual fees for NRI seats in private medical colleges has been raised from Rs. 15 lakhs to Rs. 20 lakhs. The order also states that the extra Rs. 75 lakhs that each private medical college gets by the increased fees for NRI seats must be given as scholarship for students from BPL.

The three rounds of discussions between the government and the managements of private medical colleges that happened regarding the increase of fees to Rs. 12 lakhs to Rs. 15 lakhs went in vain as the government rejected their demands. Justice Rajendra Babu Committee was then appointed to decide on the fees for private medical colleges in the state.

The Committee adapted a formulae of dividing the total fees collected in private medical colleges except the fees for NRI seats by 85 to arrive at the amount of Rs. 5.5 lakhs. They did this to avoid a dent in the earnings of the private medical colleges. Justice R Rajendra Babu said that the decision was taken after much consideration even though the private medical colleges did not furnish them with the details of their expenses.

This year, the admission to the seats in private medical colleges including NRI seats will be decided by the entrance commissioner based on the NEET exam rank.

But with the new increased fees structure children of middleclass and poor men even with a higher NEET rank cannot afford to do the MBBS course. Only the 1100 seats available in the seven government medical colleges across the state are available for them to study on a lower fees, as the annual fees in these colleges will continue to be Rs. 25,000.
